[Wii] Review Roundup - Metroid: Other M
Posted by: GlueGun18 - 08-27-2010 07:03 PM - Replies (6)

[Image: game-news-image-2010-c686b64700fce0491db...c2ff58.jpg]
IGN - 8.5/10 - "Many of the issues in Metroid: Other M could have been addressed with the inclusion of nunchuck control, so I’m not entirely sold on the idea that single Wii remote control was the best thing for this game. But in the end, this is still an excellent experience with great, intense action and an engaging story that turns one of Nintendo’s beloved characters into something more than a kick-ass bounty hunter."

GameSpot - 8.5/10 - "It should take around 12 hours to play through Other M, which is a fine length for an action-focused game. But because the combat is so thrilling, and it's so rewarding to search for every item along the way, the ending pops up all too soon. You'll likely be left wanting more of this exciting adventure, a testament to the invigorating quality of the smoothly executed shift in focus. People expecting Other M to conform to the elements that made Super Metroid and Metroid Prime classics may be disappointed at first, but stick with it. This is another great entry in the series, and a refreshing change of pace for the well-traveled bounty hunter."

GameTrailers - 8.6/10 - "Metroid: Other M is a successful experiment in shifting perspectives and re-imagining how an old franchise can play. Just like the Prime trilogy, it manages to skirt the line between satisfying its fan base and providing something unique. The decision to give Samus a voice is sure to be controversial thanks to the ho-hum script, and this coupled with a plethora of side characters clamps down on the feeling of isolation. Even so, it's a solid game from top to bottom that rolls the dice several times without them ever coming up snake eyes."

1UP - B- - "But that's Other M: occasionally nonsensical (and always extraneous) story elements wrapped around generally excellent action and fun abilities. When you introduce more plot, you introduce more room for plot holes. And as you delve further into Other M, instead of getting more of the things that work (combat), you get more of the things you don't care about (overwrought story). Rather than keep the exposition to a minimum like Super Metroid, which was able to tell a full story with hardly any text at all, Other M borrows its contrivances from Metal Gear Solid 2."

Eurogamer - 8/10 - "The occasional fumbling by Team Ninja can't take away from its otherwise astonishing achievement. Guess what? The unlikeliest of developers has created a game that manages to encapsulate huge chunks of the series' traditions, even as it pushes it onwards in a slick new direction. Metroid has spliced its genes once again, and the results are typically fascinating."

For those of you who aren't familiar with Uncharted 2's "The Lab", its a special playlist that Naughty Dog runs on certain weekends that feature new and experimental game modes. Naughty Dog will also be running feedback threads on their forums where fans can discuss, criticize and complain about the game modes.

The modes for September are:

September 3 - 7
3 vs 3 Deathmatch
We’ve dropped two of everything for all matches in this Deathmatch variation – you’ll have two less teammates and two less Boosters to aid in your domination of the opposing team.

September 17 - 20
Desert - 5 Shootout
In this episode of “The Lab,” you’ve only got your trusty eight-shooter, the Desert - 5, to rely on against your opponents.

  [PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Madden NFL 11
Posted by: GlueGun18 - 08-26-2010 08:23 PM - No Replies

[Image: game-news-image-2010-ba26144a4d08574cc59...9f148a.jpg]
IGN - 8/10 - "I think it’s clear that this year’s Madden is geared toward the mainstream football fan; someone who just wants to come in after playing a game of catch outside and get their hands on some real NFL talent. For that audience Madden NFL 11 delivers. However, if you’re the type of player who sits alone in your living room combing the free agent wire for a player to add to your beloved franchise, I think this year’s Madden is going to leave something to be desired."

GameSpot - 8/10 - "Despite the gameplay quirks and presentation hiccups, Madden NFL 11 is still a great football game. The improved AI and enhanced physics system makes the on-field action even better than before, and the realistic commentary makes your quest for victory carry that much more weight. The changes are generally subtle, so casual football fans may not notice all the tweaks to the core gameplay. But for those who live for football and get pumped for granular changes, Madden NFL 11 once again hoists the Lombardi Trophy."

GameTrailers - 9.1/10 - "With such minimal strides year after year it can be easy to tune this series out when it comes time for reviews, but Madden NFL 11 is one of the true steps forward for the franchise. Some annoying issues have finally been rectified, the presentation has received an overhaul, and the brand new GameFlow play calling requires some work, but provides a worthy payoff. Couple all this with great running and tackling and you have a product that's worth full asking price."

1UP - A- - "Madden NFL 11 has a lot of the building blocks for making a great football game and is certainly a step in the right direction for proving that EA deserves the NFL exclusivity it has. If EA Tiburon can keep their focus and actually work on improving what they've already crafted in this year's iteration, rather than doing what they often do and start revamping everything all over again, the series is in a great position to keep this momentum (without a turbo button)."

Gaming Age - A- - "There is so much to like and so little to dislike this year, that if given a chance, I can't see how any true football fan can't find a way to experience Madden football this year and have nothing but a good time. It's true, you may have to tweak the game to your preference, but once you find your niche, there is little denying that Madden 11 is not only a solid football title, but quite possible the best of the franchise's history."

[PS3, X360, PC] Review Roundup - Mafia II
Posted by: GlueGun18 - 08-26-2010 08:04 PM - Replies (3)

[Image: game-news-image-2010-1d716244655ff3e6bda...edf9ab.jpg]
IGN - 7/10 - "Mafia II is an interesting mobster tale with some great voice acting and cool cutscenes; if you have a “made man” itch, feel free to scratch it here, but be prepared for a pretty standard third-person shooter in the gameplay department. The “take cover, kill everyone, do it again” mechanic didn’t wow me, but it didn’t let me down either. Mafia II is a solid little game that’ll give you a fun ride – just don’t expect the world."

GameSpot - 8.5/10 - "Mafia II is an excellent return of a franchise with great promise. Vito and his associates are memorable characters in a city bursting with subtle visual details and violent undertones. The story pulls no punches, neither glorifying nor demeaning the difficult lives its protagonists lead--just presenting them with brutal honesty and letting you reach your own conclusions. After the 15-or-so hours it might take you to gun through Vito's story, it's hard not to come away with the sense that there should have been more to do in this beautiful city. Yet while you might be disappointed with what Mafia II doesn't do, it's hard to be disappointed by what this excellent game does do: deliver fun shoot-outs and pockets of shocking brutality in a world you're delighted to be a part of."

GameTrailers - 7.7/10 - "Taken for its strengths, Mafia II delivers a rich slice of 50's mob culture with phenomenal atmosphere and solid gameplay that's easily worth experiencing. But if you're expecting the generous breadth of the best open-world games, the absence of extracurricular activities will be a bit of a disappointment. It doesn't quite stand above the luminaries that inspire it, but if you're looking for an excellently-realized shooter that sticks straight to its target, Mafia II is worth a shot."

1UP - B - "For all of the hard work that has obviously gone into Mafia II, I really wanted more than what it finally delivered. I enjoyed the story, characters, and setting, and I learned to overlook the narrative problems so I could sit back and enjoy the ride. But once it was over, it was over; the lack of additional content for every platform right out of the box is unfortunate. When the strength of the game lies solely on the shoulders of an inconsistent narrative in a limited yet gorgeous environment, I can't help but feel robbed of an experience that should be greater than the sum of its parts."

Eurogamer - 4/10 - "Mafia II gets the last word by destroying the myth that the mafia is interesting at all. It contends that the mob world is a hell of boredom populated by aggressively stupid automatons. These drones wake up each morning, carry out a series of repetitious tasks, and return home. The message: thug life is nothing more than it appears. And Mafia II is even less."

[X360] Voice Communication Quality to be Improved with Fall Update
Posted by: GlueGun18 - 08-26-2010 07:35 PM - Replies (2)

[Image: game-news-image-2010-d08fbee3f8eafdd6f3f...a92904.jpg]
"F*** off, f***** noobtuber..."

Xbox Live's voice communication feature has been a key component to its success. As the only console to come packaged with a headset, it has helped push Xbox Live in becoming the most revered online platform. While poor sound quality has rarely been a significant bone of contention for most gamers, most will readily acknowledge that communication can often be described as crackly and unclear. Microsoft plans to improve the clarity of your chatting, trash-talking, and the rest of your audible nincompoopery by upgrading the audio codec that governs all the online voice chat on Xbox Live, as part of the annual Xbox Live fall update.

Unfortunately, the improvements stop at sound clarity: we will have to wait for a future update until Microsoft can find a way to mute screaming preteens, racists, chronic F-bomb users, and morons in general. In the meantime, the fall update should invade your Xbox 360 sometime in November, to coincide with the release of Kinect.

[DS] The Set List for Rock Band 3 on DS Announced
Posted by: LemonManX - 08-26-2010 08:24 AM - Replies (1)

You might remember Harmonix announced the setlist for Rock Band 3 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. However, since then they have sent an e-mail confirming all the tracks. In addition to this, they indicated which 25 tracks would also feature in the Nintendo DS version of the game. So feast your eyes upon the DS setlist:

The B-52′s – ”Rock Lobster”
The Cure – ”Just Like Heaven”
Doobie Brothers – ”China Grove”
The Doors – ”Break on Through (To the Other Side)”
Faith No More – ”Midlife Crisis”
Foreigner – ”Cold As Ice”
Ida Maria – ”Oh My God”
INXS – ”Need You Tonight”
Jane’s Addiction – ”Been Caught Stealing”
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – ”Crosstown Traffic”
Joan Jett – ”I Love Rock N’ Roll”
Metric – ”Combat Baby”
Night Ranger – ”Sister Christian”
Ozzy Osbourne – ”Crazy Train”
Paramore – ”Misery Business”
Phoenix – ”Lasso”
Queen – ”Bohemian Rhapsody”
Rilo Kiley – ”Portions for Foxes”
Roxette – ”The Look”
Smash Mouth – ”Walkin’ On The Sun”
Tokio Hotel – ”Humanoid”
The Vines – ”Get Free”
Whitesnake – ”Here I Go Again”
The White Stripes – ”The Hardest Button to Button”
Yes – ”Roundabout”

As you can see, they have tried to include all of the 'essential' tracks from the console versions of Rock Band 3. Obviously the handheld version will also lack downloadable content, so that is another negative.

[PSP] Japan Can Expect The 3rd Birthday by Winter 2010
Posted by: LemonManX - 08-26-2010 03:29 AM - No Replies

[Image: game-news-image-2010-51690a0f7410f213c14...697dd1.jpg]

Yoshinori Kitase, producer of The 3rd Birthday, has given a release window for the Japanese release of The 3rd Birthday in an interview with VG247.

“The Japanese version’s going to come out in winter this year."

This doesn't leave too much time considering that Square Enix are interested in releasing Parasite Eve 1 and Parasite Eve 2 on the PlayStation Network as PSOne Classics. He then goes on to mention that they are hard at work at the localised version and are hoping to release it worldwide not too long after the Japanese release. He would not specify a time or release window, but when asked if it would release in 2011 he replied with, "yes."

[PS3, X360, PC] New DLC Announced for Dragon Age: Origins
Posted by: LemonManX - 08-25-2010 07:27 PM - Replies (3)

BioWare have announced a new episode of DLC for Dragon Age: Origins, however this is no regular DLC. This episode will conclude the story and sees you investigating Morrigan. It is titled "Witch Hunt" and it will be releasing on the 7th of September and will set you back $7 USD (560MSP) on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

BioWare certainly knows how to stir up a tease, "but whether you seek answers, revenge, or reconciliation with your lost love you may find more than you bargained for." How did you treat your time with Morrigan in the game? Are you interested to discover her motives and conclude the Dragon Age: Origins story?

You'll then face an anxious wait until Dragon Age 2.

[PC] Mod Tools Likely to Come to Call of Duty: Black Ops

After they never really arrived for Modern Warfare 2, some may have been concerned that they would skip over Black Ops as well. Luckily this doesn't appear to be the case.

Cesar Stastny, part of Treyarch, posted on the game's official forums with the information. "We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game," and then refers to some technical difficulties that are present. "Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game."

However, at this point it sounds pretty promising. Will you be picking up Black Ops? Or skipping it over Medal of Honor? Or just getting both?

[PS3] Sony Unlikely to Charge Extra for 3D Games
Posted by: GlueGun18 - 08-24-2010 07:21 PM - Replies (3)

[Image: game-news-image-2010-71cc0b15d02dff34f1d...e89806.png]

Gamers had to know it was only a matter of time before 3D infiltrated the gaming industry the same way it has seemingly taken over the film industry. At E3 earlier this year, Sony showed off some impressive demos of some of their biggest upcoming games like Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 while Nintendo was off wowing attendees with the 3DS. The "oohs" and "aahs" quickly fade to moans and groans though once the reality of the expense of this new technology sets in. 3D TV displays cost hundreds or even thousands more than the average high-definition TV (which most people have only recently purchased), not to mention several hundred dollars more required for the 3D glasses. Publisher EA rubbed more salt into the wound by suggesting that 3D games might also carry a premium price tag.

Sony is painting a different picture, however, with SCEE head honcho Andrew House claiming that the company hasn't even considered charging more for games with 3D capabilities: "This isn't a really significant investment and probably plays really good dividends in terms of return on investment," House told GI.biz. "Somebody asked how much of a premium are we going to charge on 3D games, and I said 'we haven't considered charging for one.'"

It doesn't do a whole lot to relieve the expense of 3D gaming, but it's nice to know that Sony isn't deliberately further gouging gamers anxious to get the 3D experience.

[Wii] Metroid: Other M Squeezed Onto Dual-Layered DVD, No Gravity Suit
Posted by: LemonManX - 08-23-2010 11:47 PM - Replies (2)

[Image: game-news-image-2010-ac9680cc05cd8fb85cf...01a9c1.jpg]

The second installment of the Metroid: Other M related Iwata Asks segments has provided us with a few nuggets of interesting information. One that may make you happy, and another that may sadden you (depending on your personal views on the reasoning).

First off, it has been revealed that Metroid: Other M is joining both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the Metroid Prime Trilogy in the exclusive library of dual-layered DVD games. The development team also barely managed to squeeze the game on even that and were literally cutting seconds out of scenes here and there to make it fit.

The second piece of information is that the game may not feature Samus' famous Gravity Suit in its usual form. They discuss how they weren't sure if the sudden change from her orange Varia Suit to her purple Gravity Suit would suit the mood. The father of Metroid, Yoshio Sakamoto, decided that it looked somewhat out of place towards some of the serious events at the end of the game. As a result of this, he requested that the development team remove it from the game and find an alternative method of showcasing the properties of the Gravity Suit. Now when Samus' is using the abilities of the Gravity Suit, the lights will glow purple and there will be a slight purple aura around her.

It is unclear how fans will react to this, but its not long now until we all get to jump into the suit with Samus Aran for another adventure.

[Wii] And Yet It Moves Hits WiiWare
Posted by: LemonManX - 08-23-2010 11:47 PM - No Replies

Developer, Broken Rules, has today announced that their indie game, And Yet It Moves, will be hitting WiiWare in North America today. Gamers who endeavor to pick up the WiiWare version of the PC game will be rewarded with new levels, bonus modes and Wii controls that will really have you twisting and turning.

The downloadable title will set you back 1,000 Wii Points. But feedback on the PC version of the game should be enough to convince even the most unsure gamers out there who have an interest in this game.

It will be hitting PAL's WiiWare service on the 27th of August, which thankfully isn't that much more of a wait.

[DS] Pokémon Black and White Go Platinum Already
Posted by: LemonManX - 08-23-2010 10:30 PM - No Replies

[Image: game-news-image-2010-b04b5601f62ec2b5ecc...2afc8b.jpg]

That's right folks. Just to serve as further proof to Nintendo that their beloved Pokémon is as popular as ever, it has just been discovered that the newest installments have gone platinum already.

As of the 22nd of August, pre-order numbers were aroung the 1.08 million mark. Which is an astonishing number for a game that hasn't even released yet. Not only is this number incredibly high, but it has set a new record for fastest selling DS title ever.

The Pokémon Co. is going so far as to predict it will hit 1.5 million pre-orders before the September 18th release date. Do you think it will reach those dizzying heights?
