[PC, PS3, X360] Casey Hudson responds to Mass Effect 3 ending controversy, talks DLC

Mass Effect 3's ending has come under fire from all directions recently. Within good reason as well, it ignores a lot of the franchise's key strengths and just plain makes very little sense. It is only natural for fans to be whipped into an outrage considering many of them have now invested 120 hours into this series. Casey Hudson spoke with Digital Trends about the backlash and had the following to say.

"I didn’t want the game to be forgettable, and even right down to the sort of polarizing reaction that the ends have had with people–debating what the endings mean and what’s going to happen next, and what situation are the characters left in. That to me is part of what’s exciting about this story. There has always been a little bit of mystery there and a little bit of interpretation, and it’s a story that people can talk about after the fact."

Whilst I understand what he is saying, he certainly hasn't really addressed the central issue at hand regarding the endings. At the very least, it certainly won't be forgettable even if it is for all the wrong reasons.

Hudson also went on to reassure fans that BioWare does listen to them, especially when it comes to crafting DLC. He refers to how fans said they wanted more Liara content so they put together the Lair of the Shadow Broker (probably BioWare's most impressive piece of DLC since Dragon Age: Awakening). "It's very important to us and we will always listen to feedback, interpret it and try and do the right thing by our fans," said Hudson in the interview. So I guess this means BioWare are keeping an eye on fan discussion to fuel their Mass Effect 3 DLC plans?

You can check out the full interview at Digital Trends, he tends to not really get asked any of the hard questions that I'm sure a lot of fans want him pressed about but at the same time this is the first time he has emerged after the controversy kicked up.

What do you think about the state of BioWare and the Mass Effect 3 ending? Remember to tag spoilers.

Conspiracy: Bad ending to get us to pay for good ending DLC in a few months?

Could happen. It is just so terrible that the ending goes against the very idea of the franchise and just makes no sense.

I remember when BioWare were a good developer. Before Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3.

Emotionally-charged overstatement? You just gave the game a pretty glowing review. I can't say too much since I haven't got so far as the ending but ME3 is a fine game if you take the alleged disappointing ending away. I understand how that could sour the experience but it doesn't make BioWare a bad developer.

True, I was a bit harsh. But honestly, when you see the ending... it's astounding how it passed as the actual conclusion.
