Nintendo have announced during an episode of Pokemon Smash in Japan this weekend that a sequel to last year's hits Pokemon Black and White will be coming to the original DS in Japan this summer, simply titled Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2. This marks the first time in the long, storied history of the franchise that a direct, numbered sequel will be released for a traditional Pokemon game. No gameplay details have been announced yet.

A North American and European release window was not given, however Nintendo says that details for the Western versions of the games will become available "throughout the year", perhaps indicating a late 2012 or 2013 release.

I was quite confused by this announcement. Firstly, two sequels to the previous Pokemon games? Why not just release the usual third entry that adds a bit more to the story? Secondly, on the Nintendo DS? Very surprising to see Nintendo not jumping on the 3DS for this.

Pokemon games have always tried to remain as compatible as possible. Gold and Silver were GBC games but still playable on the OG Gameboy, for example. They stuck with the GBA versions for as long as possible too.

I guess that they thought that since B/W were on DS then their sequel should be too.
But anyway........... It's only a matter of time. Time! Mu ha ha ha ha!

I guess we'll have to see if Nintendo can make these worthwhile, at least Gray on 3DS would have been encouragement to buy it but as it stands I can't think of much reason to do so.

Maybe they're making them separate, they avoided using the Pokémon Grey name in the announcement, so it could be possible, either way for me. EPIC WIN!!!!

They are making them separate, so instead of only one new Pokemon game Nintendo will instead be able to sell two direct sequels. I hope they don't continue down this path for Pokemon titles, I'd rather wait a few years for a new installment that uses the 3DS' power.

Probably because of the big differences between Black and White, they probably couldn't think of a way to combine them together.

We know what it was, and Red had it picked. They'll make double money off of two direct sequels as opposed to one third entry (whichn isn't ruled out).

Sigh.

I'll wait for the next generation of Pokemon games I think.

I'm slightly confused by this announcement. How would a sequel work? I have yet to finish Black but as far as I know the Pokemon stories are usually self-contained and each game you start off from the very beginning. If they were going to continue the plot, wouldn't starting off as a new trainer be a little odd? Maybe I'm just missing the point.

Either way, this is the first ever main entry in the Pokemon series where I haven't really been that excited by the announcement. I'm sure that will change when we hear more details.

Well, the ending for Black and White was somewhat open I guess. It dealt with a problem, but the bad guys could always come back.

Because why even try anymore?

Since I skipped out on Black & White, I might look into these. If I get a 3DS by that time, at least.
