[X1] No fees for used games on Xbox One after all?

Microsoft has been enduring a PR nightmare in the days following its unveiling of the Xbox One, perhaps deservedly so given the lack of focus on the machine's gaming capabilities and the terrible communication of the system's most vital features to consumers.

One of the most controversial, and confusing, aspects of the next-gen console is how it will deal with used games and game swapping. We were initially led to believe that a fee (perhaps as much as full cost of the game) would be charged every time a game was installed on a different console with a different username, however this has been disputed in days following and for whatever reason Microsoft still refuses to give us a straight answer. A new report from Polygon citing sources close to the console is now stating that this will not be the case.

According to the report, the Xbox One will automatically authenticate a game when it is installed on a different console and perform online authentication checks periodically thereafter. If the game was previously installed on another console, the game will be de-authenticated on the original console until the disc is brought back and is re-authenticated. There will allegedly be no fee involved to perform this process.

Take this with a grain of salt until we get official word from Microsoft, which will hopefully come at or before E3 in a few weeks.

[X360] Microsoft aims to sell 100 million Xbox 360s

While the focus has definitively shifted toward the next generation consoles, Microsoft is still showing solidarity in its aging Xbox 360 console in the wake of the announcement of Xbox One. Speaking with OXM, Microsoft senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi stated that the company is still hoping that the Xbox 360 can achieve 100 million units sold before all is said and done.

"We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base," Mehdi said. "That's something we're shooting for, it's not a financial plan as such, it's just rough numbers if you will. To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers. And the way we'll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments. So you'll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One."

That's a pretty lofty goal considering the console has sold around 75 million units in seven and a half years to date, however it seems clear that the company has a strategy in place to keep the console relevant in the coming years, so expect some sort of announcement regarding pricing and/or hardware revisions at E3. Only the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 have eclipsed the 100 million mark in terms of home consoles, however it is only a matter of time until the Nintendo Wii joins that company as over 99 million have been sold as of the end of March.

It has been a long wait for eager fans of Square Enix's latest MMO venture for the Final Fantasy franchise; at long last after the disaster that was Final Fantasy XIV originally launched we'll be given our chance to return this August. Currently the monthly subscription fee is looking to be about £7.69 / €10.99.

Square Enix has just forwarded confirmation that the game will be released on both PC and PlayStation 3 on August 27th. Additionally, there'll be a variety of pre-order incentives and a collector's edition will also be made available; you'll find out what they include below.

PRE-ORDER INCENTIVES

Early Access: You'll be able to access the game's servers earlier than those who don't pre-order; guaranteeing that you'll be able to make a head start in Eorzea.

Cait Sith Doll Minion: I shuddered as I read this, but if you pre-order you'll also unlocked non-combat pet that once joined Cloud Strife and co. in a fight to save the planet.

Mog Cap: You'll also obtain a special Moogle themed hat to show that you truly are a Final Fantasy fan.

COLLECTOR'S EDITION

A special collector's box designed by Yoshitaka Amano, the legendary Final Fantasy artist.

A gorgeous 80-page hardcover artbook entitled "Art of Eorzea", including a glimpse at unseen concept art.

"The Waning of the Sixth Sun"; a special video disc that takes a cinematic look at the events that lead this realm to be "reborn."

"Sounds of Eorzea" album that brings together a selection of musical tracks from the game composed by a variety of Final Fantasy composers.

A special Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn security token that you'll use to secure user accounts.

A handful of in-game digital content including a Helm of Light, Baby Behemoth Minion, Coeurl Mount, and Behemoth Barding.

So, who's ready to return to Eorzea this August?

Nintendo has placed a date on their highly anticipated Nintendo Direct that stands to replace their annual E3 press conference.

Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe have confirmed the date and time in e-mails that have been recently forwarded (they also included links to the Nintendo Direct sites where you'll be able to watch them; but they still house the stream from the May 17 at this point in time).

Nintendo of America's E3 stream will be live here on June 11th at 7:00 AM PDT/ 10:00 AM EDT, whereas the Nintendo of Europe E3 stream will be live here at the same time on June 11th. We're still awaiting confirmation from Nintendo of Japan, but it seems unlikely that they'd miss out.

Remember, this is the big one. Iwata has confirmed that we'll see Super Smash Bros. 4, a 3D Mario, and Mario Kart in this stream. Fans have their fingers crossed for some other surprises as well.

[Multi] EA announces next-generation Need for Speed powered by Frostbite 3

Frostbite 3 is EA's favourite engine to tout at the moment; the next game to be powered by it is none other than Criterion's new Need for Speed title. EA revealed the game today with a teaser trailer, which you can catch below, and confirmed that it will be called Need for Speed Rivals.

According to a press release the game sees the return Speedpoints and the high stake racing that made Criterion's spin on both Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted so popular. Players will once again be encouraged to become infamous by "taking risks behind the wheel and capturing your most intense escapes on video for the world to see." You'll be keeping the stakes after each race, earning "more and more Speedpoints" in order to become a much more enticing target for the police. There's a catch though, you'll risk losing it all if you get busted.

Additionally, there'll also be a mode where players can play as the cops and bust other racers. Doing so will see them rise in the ranks of the Police Force; achieving those much needed higher ranks will unlock new police cars and more powerful items to use whilst busting other racers.

Need for Speed Rivals is slated to hit current gen platforms on November 19th with a release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to follow. This game is not to be confused with the 2004 PlayStation Portable title, Need for Speed Underground: Rivals.

Am I the only one becoming increasingly concerned by the sheer number of cross-generation games being released during the launch window for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?

Thanks for the heads up, CVG.
Am I the only one becoming increasingly concerned by the sheer number of cross-generation games being released during the launch window for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?

Thanks for the heads up, CVG.

Grand Theft Auto V doesn't care that it is releasing close to the launch of Sony and Microsoft's new generation of consoles; do you know why? It doesn't care because it is Grand Theft Auto and it is definitely going to sell.

Today Rockstar confirmed that those who are eager to throw in some extra money will be able to choose from two different special editions; one is labelled a 'Collector's Edition' and the other a 'Special Edition'.

The 'Special Edition' includes the game, a special steelbook case with exclusive artwork, and a blueprint map of Los Santos and Blaine County. The map measures 21.5" x 26.75" and includes "cryptic markings" that indicate locations for certain points of interest. Additionally, you'll also be given access to some digital goodies as well. This extra digital content includes special stunt plane trials, extra outfits (including tattoos, etc.), a 25% faster recharge ability for your special ability bar, and access to additional weapons (including free guns).

Whereas the 'Collector's Edition' offers a little extra value for your dedication (and extra money). It includes the content that you receive with the regular 'Special Edition' but also includes two extra pieces of digital content which offers custom characters for Grand Theft Auto V's online mode, and unique vehicles and garage property (including immediate access to a special garage to store custom vehicles). To start with the special garage will be stocked with a 1930's style Hotknife hotrod and the CarbonRS sports bike; a Khamelion electric car will be available in Grand Theft Auto Online as well. Besides this you'll also receive a special New Era 9FIFTY cap featuring an embroided Los Santos logo on the front and stiched Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto V logos, as well as a special Grand Theft Auto V branded security deposit bag and logo key.

So, are you eager to pick either of these up as we creep closer to Grand Theft Auto V's September 17th release date? If so, you only have to decide one thing: PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360?

[PS3] Konami announces Ultimate Edition for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was released in February, it was also a pretty decent Metal Gear spin-off when you stopped arguing with the camera and had the time to enjoy the fluidity of the game's combat. Let's not deny that Raiden was kind of a bad ass as well.

Today Konami has announced that they will be making the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Ultimate Edition available on the PlayStation Network this week for $74.99. If you purchase the 'Ultimate Edition' you will receive the game as well as a handful of skins for Raiden (Cyborg Ninja Armour Skin, Metal Gear Solid 4 Raiden Skin, Commando Armour Skin, White Armour Skin, and the Inferno Armour Skin), the VR missions, and access to both the "Jetstream" and "Blade Wolf" side stories.

If you skipped over the game when it was initially released then this is the perfect time to jump on board, I can guarantee that the game is fun.

Cut at will!

Okay, so now that Microsoft have officially unveiled their new hardware it is time to cast our gaze towards the magical city of Los Angeles for this year's annual E3 extravaganza.

Last year's show was a mixed bag.

This means that it is time to prepare ourselves for late nights, early mornings, and our carpel tunnel braces for all of the typing that will occur. Over the next few weeks we'll have previews (with a pinch of speculation) for each of the big three: Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. We'll also take a look at the third-party publishers and try to discern exactly what they'll be showing off that they both have and haven't officially announced. We'll also try to weave some other stuff into the mix in between, but we'll cross those bridges when we come to them!

Before we get into that, is there anything you are hoping for in particular at E3? We're still weeks away and we've got some stories that are sure to generate hype, especially Nintendo's new 3D Mario for the Wii U and the hope that Rare's new game will be Banjo or Killer Instinct related. EA has now also confirmed that they'll be able to showcase their next-generation work on Battlefield, Madden, FIFA, and Need for Speed whilst also talking about their plans for the Star Wars franchise. Of course, this is just scratching the surface as we can expect both Microsoft and Sony will be on the offensive to capture the money of interested consumers, with Nintendo eager to stage a comeback after a lacklustre start to their Wii U's life. The gloves will be off and it'll be every console manufacturer for themselves!

As for our presence, we'll have someone casually browsing the E3 show floor (if there is such as thing as 'casually browsing' the clogged and cramped show floor at E3) and they'll be filling us in on bits and pieces as the show unfolds.

Forever waiting for a new Metroid game; maybe this year is the year?

Personally, I'm craving a new Metroid. Considering that Super Metroid is currently 30c on the eShop it is literally the perfect time for Nintendo to consider talking about the future of that franchise, but I've also become quite jaded towards their attitude about Metroid. So, I can guarantee I won't be holding my breath! A least we'll see Super Smash Bros., right? I'm also looking forward to seeing if Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony are able to make their consoles look like must-have devices this time around. There's no doubt that Nintendo are struggling and both Microsoft and Sony have failed to inspire feverish excitement in me.

Sound off in the comments about what your dream E3 2013 announcements would be, or more realistically what you think will happen?

I don't mean that this trailer is somber in a bad way either; it was actually quite a refreshing approach to a trailer compared to previous Call of Duty reveal trailers.

The game is being developed by Infinity Ward with contributions from both Neversoft and Raven Studios, it is unclear what Neversoft and Raven Studios are helping out with at this point in time. Infinity Ward reps claim that this game will be somewhat of a twist for the Call of Duty formula, Ghosts pits players as the underdog instead of the usual superpower. Also, you'll have a dog on your team as well; you can follow him on Twitter (yes, his Twitter handle is 'Collar Duty').

Here's a peek at a special behind-the-scenes video for Ghosts from Activision.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is slated to release on November 5 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Activision, however, is being pretty tight-lipped about the next generation iteration. We know that it will be coming to Xbox One, but the reveal trailer didn't mention any other trailers (including the PlayStation 4 and Wii U), so we might have to wait a little longer for confirmation.

[X1] Remedy Entertainment developing 'Quantum Break' for the Xbox One; screens inside

Xbox 360 fans have been waiting for Remedy Entertainment to confirm that they are working on Alan Wake 2 and during the reveal for the Xbox One they found themselves disappointed as a follow-up to the surprisingly action-horror game wasn't announced.

Instead it was revealed that Remedy is working on a project known as Quantum Break for the Xbox One.

"Quantum Break blurs the line between television and gameplay, integrating the two into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience," reads the press release. Remedy are best known for their work on Alan Wake and the original Max Payne games, but this new project is definitely a bigger variety of challenge.

A vague summary of Quantum Break reveals that you'll play as a "desperate" hero who is fighting an incredibly personal battle in order to save the future before time runs out. As you play you'll notice time breaking down and split-second moments of destruction will become "epic stages of time powered action." As you progress your actions and choices you make will create a narrative tailored to your experience. Lastly, a special 'director's cut' of the show will be created based on the decisions you make during the game, potentially similar to Defiance.

Before I forget, here's the bizarre teaser trailer that was premiered during the reveal.

Are you convinced? It is certainly an interesting on paper but it also seems like a concept that would need to be played out before we could judge it wholly; roll on E3 where we'll hopefully see more of this mysterious project in action.

Yet another multiplatform game has been confirmed for release on Microsoft's Xbox One; once again it is one we suspected but couldn't confirm until Microsoft revealed their new console. They've now done that, so following in the footsteps of Square Enix and EA Ubisoft have added both Watch_Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag to their planned Xbox One release schedule.

So, here is our compulsory new Watch_Dogs image to accompany the re-confirmation.

And here's an EXPLOSIVE screen from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (which I want to point out was appropriately titled 'Free Run Explosion').

Watch_Dogs is releasing for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 this November with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases to follow. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is scheduled to release this October for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 with a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release to follow.

EA has repeated the move they made with Battlefield 3 by announcing that early players that pre-order Battlefield 4 before launch will also receive access to the freshly announced China Rising expansion. According to a press release the new content will include four "massive maps" set in China, new vehicles and "high-tech military tech." So, you can try and figure out what exactly the "military tech" will be but I assume it'll be some fancier weapons.

Also included in the press release was confirmation that EA will be premiering Battlefield 4's highly anticipated multiplayer during their E3 showcase, "The Download: EA 2013 Preview" which is scheduled to take place at 9:00pm GMT on June 10th on Spike TV and at EA's own website. Additionally, DICE will be streaming a lot of E3 content here including multiplayer footage with commentary.

Battlefield 4 is coming out for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on November 1st; a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release is poised to follow with more details expected to arrive soon.

So, now that Microsoft have officially announced the Xbox One we can finally start receiving confirmation e-mails about games that were previously confirmed for the PlayStation 4.

Square Enix has sent through confirmation that Thief will also be available on Xbox One as well as PC and PlayStation 4 in 2014. This was never in doubt, but Square Enix obviously couldn't announce it officially until Microsoft had thrown back the curtain on their new console.

The publisher also attached a new image to the e-mail, which I will share below, that reportedly offers a "glimpse of the next generation."

There was a lot of buzz surrounding the long-awaited reveal for Microsoft's next generation Xbox; for the most part they seem to have definitely wowed the press but gamers seem to be pretty split.

Microsoft's new console, the Xbox One (X1? XO? XONE?), was showcased during a special livestream from their Redmond campus. Inside the console itself is 5 billion transistors, 8GB of RAM, USB 3.0, a Blu-Ray drive, and native 64-bit architecture. The Kinect, which is required to use your new Xbox One, sports a fancy 1080p camera that takes 13 billionths of a second to respond to commands and will process 2GB of data a second in order to ensure it responds accurately. Yeah, I know. Also, it will track your heart rate.

No pricing was confirmed but Microsoft did claim that they were hopeful it would launch before the end of the year, potentially lining it up for a showdown with Sony's PlayStation 4.

The console will not be backwards compatible, which was expected, so if you have Xbox 360 games you are keen to keep playing then you might want to hold onto your console. In order to accomodate this Xbox Live Vice President, Marc Whitten, claims that Microsoft will continue manufacturing and selling the Xbox 360 alongside the Xbox One for the foreseeable future.

Now, here's where things start to get a bit hazy. The good news is that the console does not require a constant, always on internet connection. You can cheer for that fact. A recently posted FAQ from Microsoft claims that it doesn't require a constant connection but it will need to connect to the internet. Does that make sense? "We're designing the Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready," reads the FAQ. "We are also designing it so you can play your games and watch Blu-Ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection"

As for their stance on used games, it seems to still be up in the air. There are conflicting reports across the internet, including one over at Wired mentions that games will be installed and locked to a user's account and that if another user wants to play that game they'll have the option to pay a fee in order to install the game. However, there are also claims that this report is incorrect. The FAQ says, "We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later." There's plenty of wriggle room in that vague statement, if it was the same as we traditionally work used games then they could easily come out an say it. It is also a possibility they are waiting for Sony to take some sort of stance on the issue as well. Either way, we'll have to wait for the official word from Microsoft.

As for games? There were a number confirmed including Forza Motorsport 5, Quantum Break, Thief, UFC, Watch_Dogs, Assassin's Creed 4, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA Soccer 14, Madden 25, NBA Live 14, and Destiny.

If you really want something to chew on; there's a report that Microsoft could show a 'historic' franchise at E3 for the Xbox One. What makes this rumour even better? It'll be from Rare! So, hedging all bets: Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct?

Did Microsoft 'wow' you with the Xbox One? Or do they still have a lot of explaining to do?

[Wii U] Actually, EA is developing games for the Wii U

Remember that story we ran the other day about how EA wasn't developing any games for the Wii U? Yeah, that apparently isn't the case.

IGN is reporting that during the Stifel Nicolaus 2013 Internet, media and Communications Conference it was confirmed by Blake Jorgensen, EA's CFO, that the company will, in fact, be bringing some of their games to the Wii U.

However, people are correct in assuming it won't be many it is certainly an exponential increase over the amount that EA's spokesperson, Jeff Brown, claimed were coming (which was 0).

"You know, I think Nintendo's business was more [an] extension of their last console," Jorgensen said. "I think what the consumer will find is a lot more powerful gameplay with the new boxes that are coming out, and a lot of excitement, but it'll remain to be seen as to the services associated with those as to how consumers decide which direction they might go."

It shouldn't be that surprising, EA couldn't really afford to skip over the Wii U. The only question remains is this: what games will EA bring to the Wii U? We already know that Battlefield 4 is off the table and considering that it was an EA Sports developer trash-talking the Wii U it'd be odd to see EA Sports titles come to the console as well; we'll probably discover the truth at E3 in a few weeks time.

Last week we posted about a flashy trailer for a mysterious project being worked on by Sony; today it has revealed itself to be a Vita game. The game's going by the name Freedom Wars and you can check out the debut trailer below (thanks to Games HQ Media)

For more details concerning the new Vita game you can watch it unfold over at NeoGAF (which is where the known details originated) but according to a translated press release the blurb offers the following summary:

"Freedom Wars is a brand new game which aims to offer a new gaming experience in the popular multiplayer action genre by taking advantage of the PS Vita's unique functions. The player is a criminal in a post-apocalyptic near future, sentenced to a million years of hard labor, fighting for his freedom. By completing missions where you rescue civilians and allies who have been captured by huge enemies known as Abductors, you can reduce your sentence. The game supports a maximum of 8 players at a time in both co-op and competitive modes, and supports Adhoc and Wi-Fi Online functions so players all over the country can play together. The game will also support the GPS and Near capabilities of the PS Vita to enhance the gameplay experience."

It is unclear if this game will make it to the West, but considering that its only just been officially announced it is not completely out of the picture either. You'll have to join us in keeping your ears to the ground for any further rumblings.

Remember: E3 is less than a month away.

[X360, X720] Watch some Aussie Call of Duty fans react to early peek at Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 later this year but what about the next generation systems? What about the PlayStation 4, Wii U, or next generation Xbox?

Well, we can assume that we'll be getting a peek at the next generation version of Call of Duty: Ghosts at Microsoft's big Xbox event in less than two hours; it seems even more likely now that Microsoft Australia has uploaded the following video featuring fan reactions towards the early CAll of Duty: Ghosts footage.

Yeah, I know. It was kind of corny, but you can't blame Microsoft for generating buzz for a major console move like Call of Duty. Don't be surprised if it is only available in 'next gen' format on the new Xbox exclusively for a limited window though; at the very least they'll be handing out their DLC early to Xbox users again.

As for me; I just can't get excited over Call of Duty. If you can then that's great! Enjoy the reactions.

[X360] Molyneux believes the Xbox 360 won this gen; cautions Microsoft about future

With this generation of consoles well and truly wrapping up, and on the eve of the new Xbox announcement, Peter Molyneux spoke with BBC about the future of Microsoft.

In the feature Molyneux, head of 22 Cans, has revealed that he believes that Microsoft won the PlayStation 3/Wii/Xbox 360 generation. "Rightfully, Microsoft can claim it won the last console generation," said Molyneux. "However, it has always targeted the living room as the big prize."

He also concedes that this goal, to take over the living room, is one of the main reasons for their success.

"That's why it packed the 360 with an array of 'living room' features to try to persuade us that the machine could be a mix of set-top box, internet music streamer and Facebook browser."

"Tablet, mobile PC and smartphone makers are refreshing their hardware on what feels like almost a weekly basis. And on the horizon looms Valve with its PC-based Steam Box," Molyneux accurately claims. I'm not really a fan of the smartphone video game market at the moment; they've given me little to truly enjoy for an extended period of time (unless I count Square Enix's The World Ends With You port for iOS devices) but that's because I'm still not sold on the concept. That concept being a video game that you can pick and play for a brief period of time; I'm never really in that zone and if I am I'm still one of those dinosaur's that would sooner pull out his 3DS.

"Its competition is no longer Sony and Nintendo, but rather Apple, Google and Samsung."

So, what do you think? Is Molyneux onto something here? Microsoft's certainly going to be setting their sights on the living room and that broader audience of gamers that Nintendo seems to have lost touch with. Ultimately, that could end up being a fruitless endeavor considering that the tablet and smartphone market has already snatched them.

Should Microsoft focus on video games or multimedia functions leading up to the Xbox's launch? Which do you think they will focus on, regardless of whether they should or shouldn't do so, over the next few months?

Thanks VG247.

E3 is only a few weeks ago and Sony isn't about to let Microsoft hog the spotlight this week. So they've released this incredibly brief teaser video, which was caught by NeoGAF, that offers what might be our first glimpse at the actual console.

NeoGAF user, Dutch Slayer, has posted two gifs of the trailer's tease, one is at regular speed and the other is slowed down.

June 10th seems to be the day we'll see its final form. If that is even its final form. Honestly, I'm hoping the final product is this blurry. Just imagine that sitting next to your TV.
