[Mac] Valve Bringing Steam & Source to the Mac

Today, Valve announced that they will be bringing their Steam service and Source engine to the Macintosh platform.

To make this announcement with your while, Mac fans, Valve says that they'll be releasing their library of games including Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series along with Steam come this April.

In their announcement, Valve says that they'll be treating the Macintosh as a "tier-1 platform", meaning that you'll be getting new game releases at the same time as Windows and Xbox 360 users, updates for Mac versions of games will release as the same time as the ones for Windows, and that Mac and Windows users will share "the same multiplayer universe". This means you'll be sharing servers, lobbies and such.

So what do you think of Valve's approach to reaching out to the Mac platform for gaming? Do you think it's a good thing that we'll be expanding the "proper" audience of gamers or do you think it's a complete waste of time?

As long as they don't drop the DirectX render path, I'm fine with it.

Windows OpenGL GPU drivers haven't been actively developed since DX9 came out so Graphics intensive OGL games get a severe performance hit.

This is a complete waste of time since the Mac doesn't have 5% of the gaming library as Windows.
